Physiotherapist-led Group Session

This session is suitable for patients who are:

Awaiting total hip replacement (THR).

6 weeks after hip replacement and they:

✔️Are able to independently ambulate ± stick

✔️Are able to sit-to-stand independently

✔️Have minimal resting pain (<3/10 on VAS scale)

✔️Have no red flags (infection, DVT, dislocation signs)

Or other patients, who have been specifically advised by their physiotherapist to join these rehabilitative sessions

What are the benefits of group physiotherapy sessions?

 

These sessions are designed to help you:

      • Get stronger and more confident on your new hip
      • Improve walking, balance, and stamina
      • Return safely to daily activities, hobbies, and exercise
      • Learn how to use the gym independently

If you have had the hip replacement, at 6 weeks after surgery, your hip replacement is designed to move and be loaded.

Exercise is safe and important for your recovery.

What to expect from these sessions (45 minutes)

1. Warm-up

Gentle movement to loosen stiffness and get your muscles ready.

2. Strength exercises

These focus on the muscles that support your hip and help with everyday tasks like standing up, walking, getting on and off the floor and using the stairs

You may do (examples):

  • Sit-to-stand from a chair/box
  • Step-ups
  • Resistance exercises for hips and thighs
  • Core (trunk) exercises for stability

💡 You should feel your muscles working, but not sharp pain.

3. Balance & functional exercises

These help reduce the risk of falls and improve confidence.

You may do:

  • Standing balance exercises
  • Single-leg standing
  • Walking around obstacles
  • Weight-shifting exercises

4. Cardiovascular exercise

To improve fitness and walking endurance.

Examples:

  • Stationary bike
  • Ski Erg

5. Practicing getting on and off the floor

6. Cool-down

 

How hard should it feel?

  • Exercise effort: moderate (you should be slightly out of breath but able to talk)
  • Pain during exercise: no more than 4/10 (0=no pain; 10=most painful)
  • Mild muscle ache later is normal
  • Pain should settle within 24 hours

If pain increases or lasts longer, let the physiotherapist know.

 

Safety first – when to stop and tell your physio

Stop exercising and inform us if you have:

  • Increasing hip pain or sudden sharp pain
  • Redness, swelling, or heat around the wound (if you have had THR)
  • Fever or feeling unwell
  • New leg swelling or calf pain
  • A feeling that the hip has “slipped out” (if you have had THR)

 

Looking ahead

This class helps prepare you to:

✔️ Return to independent gym exercise

✔️ Walk longer distances

✔️ Resume hobbies and daily activities

✔️ Build confidence in your new hip (if you have had THR)

Your physiotherapist will help you progress exercises safely over the coming weeks.
