Equilates

Equilates is a system to develop the equestrian athlete through the use of pilates mat based exercises. It specifically focuses on improving your riding posture.

Equilates uses the basic premises of Pilates: promoting elongation of the spine, muscular flexibility and balance, strengthening the core resulting in the relaxed concentration and flow needed to create the partnership between horse and rider.

They are low impact exercises and are suitable for: all ages and levels of fitness; those with back/ neck problems; those requiring rehabilitation after injury; those with osteoporosis. It is an excellent addition to a current fitness regime or a gentle start for those who have not exercised for a while.

We recently started equilates classes because of demand from existing clients. I have an equine background myself having worked as a yard manager caring for and riding competition horses in an Olympic yard for over 10 years so I fully understand the frustrations and difficulties involved in improving a rider’s posture and alignment! Presently we have two mat classes per week for equilates but are happy to provide more if there is a demand for extra classes. For more information see our timetables page and prices and terms page.

Equilates exercises are usually performed on a mat or with small props like Chi balls or resistance bands. However, there are five major pieces of specialized Pilates equipment: the Reformer, the Trapeze Table (or Cadillac), the Ladder Barrel, the Combo Chair and the Spine Corrector that can add a whole new level of interest and intensity to your Equilates experience. For more information please see the pilates equipment page.
